Spring Forum: AI in Education
The Boston Debate League’s Race, Equity, and Policy (REP) Series aims to facilitate and amplify critical discourse across the City of Boston by exploring how policy intersects with race and equity as it relates to issues impacting our communities. This year’s REP Series Spring Forum created an opportunity for healthy discussion around a topic that is relevant and timely in our community: AI in Education.
Artificial Intelligence is a readily available, powerful tool with ever-growing potential to positively contribute to education and learning. AI is here to stay, and yet, its widespread use raises concerns: How can educators continue to advance students’ skills in writing and critical thinking without banning the use of AI, acknowledging that understanding AI is a valuable skill for students and educators both now and in the future?
On Thursday April 10, 2025, the Boston Debate League, in partnership with 826 Boston and WriteBoston, hosted an engaging event at Roxbury Community College that brought together students and educators to address that question and explore what a classroom could look like when it leverages and completely embraces the power of AI for learning.
Attendees listened to a youth perspective on AI and education from BDL debater, Alana Laforest, and insights from Dr. Kimberly Lucas, Professor of the Practice in Public Policy and Economic Justice at Northeastern University. They then gathered in small groups to respond to four question prompts developed by young people from 826 Boston, WriteBoston, and the BDL. The questions were designed to spur conversation about how participants have used AI and how they would like to see AI integrated into education. After the group discussions, attendees came back together to discuss highlights from their conversations, points of agreement and disagreement, and their aspirations for the future of AI in education.
