Boston Debate Makes History Once Again!
BDL Travel Team debaters just can’t seem to stop stacking up the achievements!
We brought 6 teams to Mamaroneck High School’s NY Fall Faceoff in Mamaroneck, NY over the weekend of December 5th:
Boston Latin Academy Alana Laforest & Ava Levine-Fried
Brooke High School AJ Shrestha & Natalie Lopez
Ruth Batson Academy Kai Funches & Lindsey Nguyen
Somerville High School Silas Wickenden & Miles Marable
Somerville/Fenway Chris Castro & Kit Hagenbuch
Brooke/Somerville Gabby Natareno & Kai Chin
The three Brooke debaters competed in the Varsity division at a national circuit tournament for the first time! Brooke’s Shrestha and Lopez finished with an even 3-3 record, especially impressive given that they’re both 9th graders. Even though the hybrid Brooke/Somerville team finished 2-4, it was a great introduction to Varsity aided by Somerville’s Kai Chin’s extra experience and guidance.
Ruth Batson finished 3-3 with both debaters placing in the top one-third of speakers in the division. This team of sophomores has put up consistently strong results at both national circuit tournaments they’ve attended this year.
Somerville’s Silas & Miles finished preliminary rounds with a strong 4-2 record as the 18th seed, just 2 seeds away from advancing to elimination rounds. This marks the team’s first performance with a positive record at a national circuit tournament—a demonstration of their hard work and continuous improvement.
Boston Latin Academy finished prelims with a 5-1 record, with Ava placing as the 14th speaker and Alana as the 25th. They entered elimination rounds as the 7th overall seed and finished the tournament in octafinals after a very close 2-1 loss to Lexington (the eventual 2nd place team). This was one round shy of earning their second bid to the Tournament of Champions (TOC), which means they’ll keep pushing to qualify to the prestigious competition for the next few tournaments.
The standout performance of the weekend came from the hybrid partnership of Fenway’s Kit Hagenbuch and Somerville’s Chris Castro. Even with limited tournament experience this year and mere weeks to prepare as a partnership after the hybrid entry was approved by the tournament, they blazed through prelims with a 5-1 record. Their speaker points earned them an impressive 3rd seed going into elimination rounds, with Kit earning 13th speaker at their first tournament of the year and Chris achieving 3rd place speaker as a sophomore! They won their octafinal and quarterfinal rounds to finish in the semifinals, earning a bid to the TOC along the way! This is the first bid earned by a debater from either high school ever, and a truly incredible overall performance. While it remains to be seen whether the TOC will allow the bid to stand (they historically disallow hybrid entries), the decision does not detract from their achievements over that weekend.
This marks the first time that two teams from the BDL have held bids to the TOC concurrently! Both teams have a promising spring season ahead of them. Boston Debate’s teams continue to push themselves to new competitive heights, and they’ve done so by collaborating with one another and working as a many-school team every step of the way.
One of my highlights of the weekend was walking into the round where Kit and Chris were about to debate semifinals, and seeing a crowd of BDL debaters who were no longer competing sitting around them, computers open, asking for pre-round research assignments and working on arguments for their Travel Teammates to use in the upcoming round. It was a perfect example of how committed our debaters are to supporting and uplifting one another, and how much they value seeing each other succeed. Travel Team co-coach Liv Birnstad and I are so impressed by their effort, dedication, and attitude.
Julianna Maximo, Marketing & Communications Coordinator, joined the BDL in October 2023, but has been involved in the League since she was a sophomore at Brighton High School. Over the years, she has worn many hats for the organization – from coaching debate at English High School, to being a tournament operations volunteer and logistics intern, to helping organize the first EBA Across Boston Conference in 2016. Beyond the BDL, Julianna worked in the service industry for almost ten years, focusing on education and quality control in specialty coffee. It was through this work that she became directly involved with labor organizing and local mutual aid groups, and realized her passion for building and fostering community, whether that be chatting with the coffee shop regulars from behind the counter or hosting neighborhood-wide events. Outside of the office, Julianna spends most of her time out on walks with her dog, making ceramics, or reading.
In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
