Boston Latin Academy Team Earns Its First Tournament of Champions Bid
Over Veterans’ Day Weekend, five Boston Debate League teams traveled to Washington D.C. to compete at the Urban Debate Dragon Invitational, representing three schools across the Junior Varsity and Varsity divisions. Supported by Travel Team Coaches Mosie Burke and Liv Birnstad, BDL Staff member Julianna Maximo, and student coach Kit Hagenbuch, the group delivered one of the strongest collective performances Boston Debate has ever achieved on the national circuit.
The Varsity teams included Boston Latin Academy’s partnership of Alana Laforest and Ava Levine-Fried; two Somerville teams composed of Sage Milbury and Kai Chin, as well as Silas Wickenden and Miles Marable; and two Brooke pairings competing in JV, Kaylee Baird and Gabby Natareno alongside teammates AJ Shrestha and Natalie Lopez. For four of these five partnerships, the Dragon Invitational marked their first-ever national circuit tournament as a team. Despite the steep learning curve and the intensity of competing in the national circuit, every single team rose to the occasion. All five teams secured at least three wins in their six preliminary debates, achieving even or positive records across the board. This remarkable consistency—spanning students from different schools, grade levels, and levels of national experience—resulted in the strongest squad-wide performance the League has ever recorded at a national circuit tournament.
The weekend was particularly meaningful for the two teams from Brooke. Competing as ninth graders in their first high school national tournament, they navigated the environment with surprising poise and determination. Their success was bolstered by the guidance of Kit Hagenbuch, a senior at Fenway High School and veteran member of the Travel Team, who attended the tournament as a mentor and student coach. Kit played a crucial role in helping the Brooke debaters transition into high school competition, offering both technical instruction and emotional support during challenging rounds.
The tournament also featured a historic breakthrough for Boston Latin Academy’s Alana Laforest and Ava Levine-Fried. They delivered exceptional performances that propelled them all the way to the semifinals, achieving a top-four finish in the tournament. Their run earned them a coveted bid to the Tournament of Champions, the most prestigious event in high school debate. This milestone marks the first time in over eight years that a BDL team has secured a TOC bid and only the second time ever in Boston Debate history. Alana’s performance was further recognized with a 10th place speaker award in the Varsity division, underscoring her technical skill and clarity in round.
For coaches Liv Birnstad and Mosie Burke, the weekend served as a meaningful reminder of why this work matters. Watching newer teams find early success, returning teams achieve results that reflect years of dedication, and the entire squad rally around one another in moments of difficulty is a special experience. To Mosie, the results from this weekend demonstrate “the commitment that they, and so many of their teammates on Travel Team, have made to competitive rigor and steady improvement.”
Congratulations to all five teams for an AMAZING performance, and thank you, thank you to Travel Team coaches Liv and Mosie, whose mentorship and relentless dedication to this very nerdy and very special activity continues to make these debaters’ wildest competition dreams possible.

Julianna Maximo, Marketing & Communications Coordinator, joined the BDL in October 2023, but has been involved in the League since she was a sophomore at Brighton High School. Over the years, she has worn many hats for the organization – from coaching debate at English High School, to being a tournament operations volunteer and logistics intern, to helping organize the first EBA Across Boston Conference in 2016. Beyond the BDL, Julianna worked in the service industry for almost ten years, focusing on education and quality control in specialty coffee. It was through this work that she became directly involved with labor organizing and local mutual aid groups, and realized her passion for building and fostering community, whether that be chatting with the coffee shop regulars from behind the counter or hosting neighborhood-wide events. Outside of the office, Julianna spends most of her time out on walks with her dog, making ceramics, or reading.
In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
