On Friday, March 7, the Boston Debate League hosted its much-anticipated City Championship Finals at the Museum of Science. This annual event, now in its third year at the iconic venue, brought together over 200 supporters to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of the City Championship finalists. The combination of an esteemed location and the energy of the event creates an unforgettable experience for participants and attendees alike. The crowd included students, teammates, competitors from other schools, coaches, family members, and community advocates. Special guests attending the event included Allison Cartwright, Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court for Suffolk County, who delivered the keynote speech, as well as Boston City Councilors Sharon Durkin and Brian Worrell, whose presence underscored the importance of this event in the broader Boston community. We were also joined by two Museum of Science staff, Marie Stock and Matt Johnson, who acted as special guest judges. The City Championship Finals mark the conclusion of the BDL’s season and is the culmination of months of preparation and tough competition.
Before the event began, students had the chance to explore the Museum of Science, walking through its exhibits on natural history, modern science, and technological innovations. As the night progressed, the spotlight shifted to the highly anticipated debate rounds, with the students delivering some of the best and most thought-provoking discussions of the year. The theme for the City Championship debates was Artificial Intelligence, a topic that brought out the best in the competitors as they tackled complex ethical, social, and technological questions. Each round was filled with insightful arguments, quick thinking, and intellectual rigor, demonstrating the deep level of preparation and passion that the students bring to the table.
Congratulations to all the participants, whose commitment and perseverance were evident throughout the event. Special recognition goes to the winning teams, who are as follows:
MS Varsity: Kennedy/Brown (Wheeler & Laurent) won in a 3-0 decision over Eliot (Desai & Brown). HS DeE Varsity: Fenway (Payano & Crisostomo) won in a 3-0 decision over Fenway (Calderon & Castano).
