El Impacto del Viaje del BDL a Nueva York
Over the last weekend of January, BDL’s Debate en Español program took a three day trip to New York City, where students had the opportunity to engage in national-level experiences, including judging debates at the New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL). The trip not only provided the group with valuable debate experience but also allowed them to build connections beyond their local circuit.
Former DeE debater David Rivera shared his perspective on the trip’s significance, saying: “As a former DEE debater who could only participate locally, seeing current students having access to national opportunities such as judging at the NYCUDL brings me hope. These kinds of opportunities are a testament to the intelligence, resilience, and empathy that these students possess.”
One of the key highlights of the trip was a conversation with Puerto Rican lawyer Denise Tomasini-Joshi. David described how her discussion inspired students in the room:
“Lawyer Tomasini-Joshi led the conversation by talking about her milestones within the legal profession, which inspired everyone in the room. But she also highlighted the challenges she faced as a Latina immigrant woman, how these were discouraging at times, and how she faced them and overcame them.”
He also reflected on the leadership displayed by the BDL students during their judging responsibilities at the NYCUDL:
“Another highlight was seeing debaters taking on the role of leaders when judging at the NYCUDL. This cohort of students showcased, in my opinion, a major skill in debate: listening. They paid careful attention to debaters’ arguments to decide a winner. They also provided relevant feedback to students after rounds.”
Marcela De Souza, another DeE alumna and current BDL staff member, also shared her experience on the trip:
“Visiting the New York Urban Debate League was an incredible experience. It was inspiring to witness students build connections that extend beyond debate itself. Watching them break free from the competitive mindset to proudly represent the BDL was really remarkable.”
Marcela emphasized the sense of fulfillment she felt in supporting the next generation of debaters:
“As an alumna, it’s a privilege to work for BDL and offer the same opportunities and support that once shaped my own journey. While the responsibility was significant, the students make it incredibly rewarding. They are passionate, thoughtful, and compassionate. Seeing them form meaningful relationships beyond debate and use language as a tool to break down barriers and foster inclusion is super fulfilling.”
The trip to New York City was more than just a debate experience; it was a demonstration of the growth, leadership, and camaraderie that DeE fosters among its students. By expanding their opportunities beyond Boston, the program continues to empower young debaters to engage with the world, develop key skills, and build lasting connections.
In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
