Momentum Builds for BDL’s Travel Team in NY Mamaroneck Tournament
From December 6–8, the BDL’s Travel Team attended the NY Fall Faceoff at Mamaroneck High School for the first time, bringing five teams to compete in the highly competitive bid division. This marks an important step in BDL’s effort to expand its presence at TOC bid tournaments, which feature some of the nation’s strongest high school debaters.
All five teams participated in the bid division, which included six preliminary rounds. Three teams delivered notable performances: Boston Latin Academy’s Alana Laforest & Ava Perkins, Fenway’s Kit Hagenbuch & Dayvianna Mays, and Ruth Batson Academy’s Lindsey Nguyen & Kaimaree Funches each secured three wins, falling just one win short of advancing to elimination rounds. Somerville’s Chris & Silas and Chahat & Atticus, competing in newly formed partnerships, earned a win apiece while building their teamwork and gaining valuable experience.
“We spent the ENTIRE Amtrak ride preparing for the tournament—I think the anticipation made the ride even more exciting. Once we got to New York, it was bags down and straight to the tournament.” – Travel Team debater
A standout individual achievement came from Alana Laforest of Boston Latin Academy, who was named the 13th overall speaker out of 120 participants—a testament to her skill and preparation.
The weekend also provided a valuable educational opportunity, as all BDL teams stayed on Sunday to watch elimination rounds, practicing their flowing and judging skills while observing some of the nation’s top competitors. In addition, many of the BDL debaters who attended summer debate camps across the country were able to reunite with old friends and trade new debate strategies.
This tournament was a pivotal moment for BDL, demonstrating the potential of its students on the national stage and setting the foundation for future successes at highly competitive events.
As usual, thank you to our chaperones: Boston Latin Academy debate coach Tyler Kirk, and Travel Team coaches Liv Birnstad and Mosie Burke.
