My Unexpected Path
My name is Gabriel Ponce Lemus and I want to share my story from being a novice DeE debater to being a part of the External Affairs team at the Boston Debate League. When I first stepped onto the high school debate stage, I had no idea how profoundly it would shape my future. What began as a nervous teenager struggling to articulate complex arguments transformed into a passionate journey of personal and professional growth.
My high school debate experience was more than just constructing arguments or mastering rhetorical techniques. It was a transformative space where I learned to challenge my own assumptions, listen critically, and understand perspectives different from my own. Each tournament pushed me to research deeply, think quickly, and communicate with precision. When I found out BDL was offering a dual enrollment course with Suffolk University in debate and public speaking I signed up in a heartbeat as I wanted to take any opportunity I could to improve my debate skills. I am grateful for the opportunity to share a safe space with 9 other debaters from diverse backgrounds with one goal in mind – to improve ourselves.
Last spring marked a significant milestone in my journey. I was honored to be part of BDL’s Race, Equity, & Policy Series panel, where we delved into critical discussions about wealth disparities in Boston. The panel wasn’t just an opportunity to speak; it was a platform to amplify important conversations about educational equity and social justice. We explored complex topics surrounding the racial wealth gaps that are very visible in Boston. We explored possible solutions to make this issue more visible to the public and to provide possible solutions to lessen the gap.
Receiving a full tuition scholarship through the newly created Suffolk University scholarship specifically for Boston Debate League debaters was more than financial support—it was a vote of confidence. It validated my potential and opened doors I never thought possible. The scholarship wasn’t just about monetary assistance; it was an investment in my future and a recognition of the skills I’d developed through debate. I’m eternally grateful for the Boston Debate League to provide people like myself an easy access to college education as programs like these can be transformative for people from diverse backgrounds.
Now, as an intern with the External Affairs department of the Boston Debate League, I find myself in a position that feels like a perfect culmination of my journey. My role allows me to give back to the community that nurtured my growth, working to create opportunities for other young debaters who might be just like me—passionate, curious, and eager to make a difference.
My internship is about more than administrative tasks. It’s about continuing to break down barriers, create platforms for meaningful dialogue, and support the next generation of critical thinkers. I’m excited to contribute to programs that provide students with the tools to articulate their thoughts, challenge systemic inequities, and become empowered communicators.
The debate stage taught me that every voice matters, and now, I’m committed to ensuring more voices are heard.
In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
