Travel Team Shines at First National Circuit Tournament of the Season
“Dragon was fun! It’s the first national circuit tournament during which everyone won multiple rounds, so it’s been an extremely successful trip and very educational experience for all of us involved .” – Travel Team debater
Over Veterans’ Day weekend, the BDL’s Travel Team made an impressive showing at the Urban Debate Dragon Invitational, this season’s first national circuit tournament, hosted at the Columbia Heights Educational Campus. BDL teams celebrated several milestones, achieving strong performances and gaining invaluable experience against top-tier debate programs from across the Northeast. The trip was chaperoned by BLA coach Tyler Kirk and Travel Team coaches Mosie Burke and Liv Birnstad.
In the JV division, Lindsey Nguyen from Ruth Batson Academy, formerly BCLA-McCormack, achieved a stunning 5-0 preliminary record and advanced to the semifinals—a record-breaking accomplishment for the school. In the Varsity division, Dayvianna Mays and Kit Hagenbuch from Fenway High School reached the octofinals with a 4-2 record, marking Fenway’s best ever varsity division performance in a national tournament.
Several other BDL teams competed admirably: Boston Latin Academy’s Anderson & Levine-Fried and Laforest & Perkins recorded 2-4 and 3-3 records, respectively, while Somerville High’s Kalia & Milbury and Wickenden & Chin each held their own with 2-4 records. All teams faced some of the most competitive schools in the country, highlighting their potential for future national tournaments.
Adding to the tournament’s success, BDL debaters achieved recognition in the top ten speaker awards, with BLA’s Alana Laforest placing 9th and Fenway’s Kit Hagenbuch placing 12th. This accomplishment, coupled with the experience gained, promises a strong trajectory for the rest of the season.
Thank you to our coaches-turned-chaperones who continue to make significant contributions and ensure these opportunities can happen for our debaters. They judged more than 10 rounds collectively! Their guidance and dedication are crucial to the team’s success and growth in the national circuit.
