From Debates to Dunks: Ayub’s Path from BDL Debater to Phoenix Suns Data Engineer
Ayub Sharif, a Boston Latin Academy alumnus of 2015, found his passion for debate during high school when he joined a few friends, already debaters, at a tournament. He enjoyed the experience and the welcoming debate community and decided to join his school’s team. His debate experience significantly influenced his academic trajectory. The intellectual rigor and community of the Boston Debate League opened his eyes to the broader implications of debate, instilling skills that aided his academic success, and reframing how he approached his education.
By the end of high school, Ayub had a clear vision for his future, which led him to Dartmouth University where initially he struggled with the transition from public school to the demanding environment of Dartmouth. A pre-orientation program for first-generation students helped him navigate academic and social challenges. Despite a challenging first semester, Ayub explored diverse academic interests, eventually discovering human-centered design, a field that marries sociology with computer science. His debate experience taught him to drive his own learning, a lesson that proved invaluable in college.
Post-graduation, Ayub pursued a master’s in computer science at Northeastern University during the pandemic, entering a tough job market upon completion. He worked as a software engineer for the NBA, focusing on enhancing fan engagement through data metrics, a role he thoroughly enjoyed. Though he grew up watching basketball, Ayub didn’t initially see himself working in sports. Currently, Ayub is a data engineer with the Phoenix Suns, combining his technical skills with his love for basketball to improve fan experiences.
“Debate taught me independence – you have to drive your own experience.”
