Andrew Brokos and Kim Willingham in Conversation
Since its inception in 2006, the Boston Debate League (BDL) has undergone significant transformation and growth, driven by the dedication and commitment of individuals like BDL founder, Andrew Brokos. Andrew’s involvement with the BDL extends beyond its founding. His support includes pledging to donate a portion of his poker winnings to the organization, a testament to his unwavering commitment to its mission. In addition to his financial contributions, Andrew has also volunteered with the organization, taking on a role as a judge during the varsity City Championships in the BDL’s 2020-2021 virtual tournament season due to the COVID pandemic.
What’s particularly inspiring about the BDL’s journey is its capacity for growth and change. When Andrew first founded the BDL, he didn’t foresee the incredible possibility of someone like Kim Willingham eventually taking the reins. Kim is the first black woman to serve as executive director of the organization. She joined the BDL in 2015 as an Evidence-Based Argumentation (now Debate-Inspired Classrooms) instructional coach, but she has been an educator her entire career, and brings aboard extensive expertise on issues of social equity and justice in education.
In Part 2 of this blog series, Andrew interviews Kim on his Thinking Poker Podcast. They talk about the growth of the BDL, its continued focus on the power of young people, and its impact and promise for the future. This podcast was edited for brevity. Listen to it below.
The entire episode of the Thinking Poker podcast includes even more conversation about debate—listen here.
“I’m always surprised and then not so surprised {…} these young people are our future. They inspire me every time I go to a tournament.”
-Kim Willingham
In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
