BDL Volunteers Uplift Youth Voices During Black History Month
As the Boston Debate League heads into the last month of the 2021-2022 debate season, we’re reflecting on the fun that BDL volunteers had at the February BDL tournaments.
February is Black History Month and the BDL goes all out to lift up Black voices and work toward racial and social equity. One part of this celebration is our series of Affinity Tournament Takeovers.
Affinity Tournament Takeovers offer an opportunity for students to connect with and receive feedback from community members whose career paths and life experiences illuminate the important connections between debate and the world. BDL planned to host two Takeover Tournaments in February: the Divine 9 & Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Alumni Takeover and the Black & Latinx Professionals Takeover.
Though the Divine 9 & HBCU Alumni Takeover was canceled due to inclement weather, the Boston community was beyond prepared to support the tournament! From our tournament sponsor, State Street, who also generously pledged to bring volunteers, to our various other volunteer partners, we were ready to roll and so bummed that the tournament was canceled. A shout out to all of our Divine 9 & HBCU Alumni Takeover volunteer partners: Playworks, Northeastern University, Boston University, Bentley University, State Street, and Boston Cares. Another special thank you to the Red Sox Scholars who were prepared to give a booming and engaging kickoff as tournament speakers to open the tournament!
Our Black & Latinx Professionals Takeover was not affected by the infamous nonsense that is northeast weather. Facilitating a whopping 170 debate rounds in both English and Spanish, BDL volunteers contributed a cumulative total of 510 hours. What an impressive impact! Led by BDL alum Gema Recio, Sabrina Correia and Angelica Civilus from JP Morgan Chase set the stage for the day by giving remarks at the opening ceremony.
A shout out to all of our Black & Latinx Professionals Takeover volunteer partners: Northeastern University, Boston While Black, One Brick, Boston University, JP Morgan Chase’s BOLD and Adelante groups, Santander, Boston Cares, and Bentley University!

In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
