Coach Camp is an opportunity to build community with other debate coaches and prepare for the upcoming debate season.

Monday, August 2nd

8:30am - 9:00am: Welcome & Introductions: BDL History, Mission, Vision, and Values

9:00am - 10:30am: Week and Season Expectations: Review the season calendar, while exploring and identifying structural systems that are needed to have a successful debate team: number of practices, number of recruitment drives, accountability structure.

10:30am - 11:00am: Break

11:00am - 1:00pm: Novice Round or Varsity Round: Learn about the debate topic and arguments students in each division will be making this season.


Tuesday, August 3rd

8:30am - 8:45am: Daily Opener & Community Building

8:45am - 10:30am: Intro to Debate (introduction to the role of the Affirmative, and the general structure of debate) or Advanced Coaching (supporting students in JV and Varsity researching, adding to cases, and/or building new cases).

10:30am - 11:00am: Break

11:00am - 1:00pm: Topic Lecture & Introduction to the Evidence Broad intro to the topic: "The United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources in the United States," and a deep dive into the first novice case.


Wednesday, August 4th

8:30am - 8:45am: Daily Opener & Community Building

8:45am - 10:30am: Life Cycle of a Debater: Analyzing the "life cycle of a debater" and key strategies to engage students at critical points in that cycle: recruitment season, first practice of the season, first tournament, and first practice after a tournament.

10:30am - 11:00am: Break

11:00am - 1:00pm: Life Cycle of a Debater, Part II: Exploring strategies to recruit and retain debaters who will not self-select, targeting key points/moments in the season.


Thursday, August 5th

8:30am - 8:45am: Daily Opener & Community Building

8:45am - 11:00am: Expectations and Purpose for Each Division: Strategies to support each division in using evidence and improving debate skills.

11:00am - 11:30am: Break

11:30am - 12:15pm: Intro to Debate, Part II or Advanced Coaching, Part II

12:15pm - 1:00pm: Facilitator Office Hours (By Appointment)


Friday, August 6th

8:30am - 8:45am: Daily Opener & Community Building

8:45am - 10:30am: Coach Leading and Feedback Session: Coaches will present and receive feedback for a recruitment pitch, first lesson of the season, or any lesson on which they would like peer feedback. Mandatory for all teams.

10:30am - 11:00am: Break

11:00am - 12:30pm: Coach Leading and Feedback Session, Part II

12:30pm - 1:00pm: Closing for the Week & What's Next
