First City-Wide, Novice-JV Invitational Tournament a Smashing Success!

On December 7th and 8th, for the first time since last year’s City Championship, every Novice and JV debater from across the city competed for city-wide bragging rights at the Novice-JV, City-Wide December Invitational at Brighton High School.   After 3 tournaments this year, judges, coaches, and even our Varsity and Championship division debaters marveled at the growth of our debaters and at the rigor of argumentation and competition present at this tournament.  See pictures here.

Still, even with increased competition, Brighton High School managed to claim their 3rd consecutive Tournament Championship this year at their home tournament! Rivals Boston Latin Academy came in a close second place, trailing Brighton by a mere 10 points!  See full results here.

In the Novice division, the competition was so rigorous that with well over 16 teams earning a record of 3 to 1 or better after 4 preliminary rounds, the Boston Debate League staff decided to break to Octofinals (16 instead of 8 teams), instead of quarterfinals.  Of particular note were the performances of co-champions Saraiya Jackson & Ivan Boldewskul of BLA and top speaker Raeven Steed of JQUS who won close matches against competitors Tom Travers & Jennifer Baptiste of East Boston and Abdullahi Abdirahman & Ahmed Ibrahim of Charlestown.

In the JV division, Brighton’s soon to be Varsity team of Krystina McClure & Walae Hayek claimed their second JV tournament championship against New Mission/ BCLA’s Saned Daiz & Angelina Vallejo.  Of note, is the performance of top speaker Connie Truong of JQUS who with her top speaker teammate in Novice, helped JQUS claim both top-speaker gavels for the evening!

As always, many thanks are due to our coaches and headmasters for a fantastic, final Novice and JV tournament of 2012!  Next weekend our Varsity and Championship debaters will be facing off in a City Wide tournament at English High School!  The rounds at this city-wide tournament will set a path for those looking to earn a spot at NAUDL Nationals by winning the City Championship in March!

Also, thank you to our volunteer judges!   Elijah Ellies and Safi Farah won the outstanding judge award this weekend and next weekend it could be YOU!  Please sign up to judge at next weekend’s Varsity/Championship tournament or Middle School tournament  here!  Judging is easy, rewarding, no experience is necessary, and training is done at the tournament site.
