This past Saturday a bus full of 41 Greater Boston Policy Debate League (GBPDL) debaters left Ruggles Station at 7 in the morning for RI to compete in the second GBPDL tournament. The Rhode Island Urban Debate League hosted the tournament at Central High School in the heart of Providence where they had great welcome and great competition for us.
In the novice division Rhode Island provided a lot of tough competition for us and great learning experiences for our novices. The Boston Latin Academy Team of Arianna Ortiz-Dixon and Tajahane Francis took the 11th place team award with Ortiz-Dixon winning the 4th speaker award.
In JV, GBPDL teams had a strong showing, winning 3 out of 5 of the top team awards and 4 out of 5 of the top speaker awards with Derik Curtin and Jean-Pierre Parent from East Boston High School winning the division. Boston Latin Academy’s team of Chiamaka Obilo and Tinyon Omere earned the 3rd place team award with Omere winning the 2nd place speaker award. Further, Boston Latin Academy’s team of Michael Passariello and Marcia Pereira earned the 4th place team award with Michael Passariello winning the 4th place speaker award. English High School’s Jeff Reid won the 3rd place speaker award and East Boston High School’s Derek Curtin won the 5th place speaker award.
In Varsity, GBPDL teams had an even stronger showing against a competitive Varsity division, winning 3 out of 5 of the top team awards and 5 out of 5 of the top speaker awards with New Mission’s Gena White and Ted White winning the Varsity division! Gena White won the 4th place speaker award and Ted White earned the top speaker award. Danielle Cadet and Luci Delgado from Excel High School earned the second place team award with Danielle Cadet winning the 5th place speaker award. Brighton High School’s Nicolas Cathcart and Meybel Lopez earned the 4th place team award with Nicolas Cathcart winning the 2nd place speaker award. Nikquania Gamble from Urban Science Academy won the 3rd place speaker award.
The Greater Boston Policy Debate League is a joint effort of the Boston Debate League and local high schools in the Boston area to bring back regular policy debate tournaments. Throughout these competitions, Boston’s students are able to compete with their suburban counterparts on an even playing field. All surrounding schools are invited to join the league at any time—tournaments are free this season and there will always be a dedicated novice division with limited arguments where students can learn. Contact Matt Grimes (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more details.
The Boston Debate League extends our most sincere gratitude to Ashley Belanger, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Urban Debate League and her crew of Brown University volunteers for being such gracious hosts. We look forward to seeing everyone at the next GBPDL event on December 3rd here in Boston!
