The number of students at the first Boston Debate League tournament of the year was in the stratosphere, just like the debaters’ arguments. Over 400 students gathered to debate about space exploration policy, representing the largest tournament the city of Boston has ever seen. Roughly 180 students competed at this tournament last fall, meaning the league has doubled participation for the third consecutive year!
For the first time in our history, all 17 schools had a team or speaker receive a trophy during the awards ceremony, with East Boston High School earning top honors as overall tournament champions. Special congratulations go to New Mission High School, which won the varsity division; Brighton High School, which took the top 2 spots in the junior varsity division; and English High School and Boston Latin Academy, who were declared co-champions in the novice division.
Enormous thanks are owed to the team coaches, whose tireless dedication and enthusiasm are the key ingredients making all of this possible. The staff and administrators of English High School also did an incredible job hosting us this weekend despite unprecedented turnout.
From the debut of the middle school division to the presence of over 100 community volunteers, the tournament was awash in new milestones. The Boston Public Schools and the Boston Debate League could not be more thrilled with the outcome of this weekend and look forward to seeing the talented students of Boston pushing each other to new heights throughout the season.
