The BDL Year End Awards and 300 Student Milestone!!!

It really has been a fantastic year at the BDL. We’ve achieved so many of our goals, and are already in the process of setting new ones for next year. We had over 200 students compete in a single weekend, we had two tournaments run simultaneously at two different sites in the city, and we’ve been recognized recently as the best Urban Debate League in the US by the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues. Just two weeks ago at the City Championships the BDL even hit our ambitious goal of engaging more than 300 BPS students in a single year. We are extraordinarily proud of these accomplishments, and particularly all of our volunteers who helped to make it happen. Without volunteers and contributions from our local community there is no way we could make such a large impact on the youth of Boston.

Last Friday we came together as a league, and as a community to recognize our students achievements at the prestigious Federal Reserve Bank of Boston for the BDL Year-End Awards Ceremony. Over 300 people were in attendance at this FRB from different communities all across Boston. The BDL was especially honored to greet the family of Locksley Bryan who was in attendance while the BDL and BPS community honored their departed family member’s memory with an audio/visual presentation, an award named in his honor, and several heartfelt speeches. The event also provided us an opportunity to recognize not only the JV and Varsity Speaker, Teams and Squads of the year (Complete Results Attached), but the two teams who will represent the BDL at NAUDL Nationals in New York in just a few short weeks. After an extraordinarily close race the entire season, the two teams representing the BDL will be New Mission (Gena White & Darien Amado), and JQUS (Justin Mei & Lily Mei). Furthermore, the league also announced the winner of the Andrew Brokos award which is named for the founder of the BDL and is given to one student each year who shows exceptional character, and dedication to the advancement of his team, and his peers. The 2011 Andrew Brokos award winner is Long Dang from Dorchester.

Congratulations once again to all our competitors this year, we are looking forward to seeing you in the fall if not at our summer camp at Suffolk University in August!
