Run the Boston Marathon® for the Boston Debate League!

The Boston Debate League is completing our 3rd and final year as an official charity of the Boston Marathon®, the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathon! What does this mean? We are looking for runners (and runners-to-be) who want to join our team.

You don’t need to be an avid runner to join (although avid runners and experienced marathoners are all more than welcome)! We are looking for people who have three things in common: First, you need to believe in the important work of the Boston Debate League. If you aren’t familiar with our organization and the power of debate, please look through our website to learn more. Second, you need to have the drive and the motivation to run the 2012 Boston Marathon. Third, you need to be excited to raise funds ($4,000 minimum) to support the work of the Boston Debate League.

We appreciate how much of an impact our runners will have on our organization, and so we are proud to offer these benefits to the Boston Debate League marathon team:
• Personalized marathon training by renowned coach, Rick Muhr (see bio below)
• Group training runs every Saturday from December until Marathon Day
• Your own personal website for online fundraising
• Support from the Boston Debate League’s staff and volunteers
• A group of runners who will support you from your first step to your last
• The chance to meet the students who will personally benefit from your support

TO APPLY:
Please fill out THE APPLICATION and mail, e-mail, or fax it to Anne Phillips (e-mail is strongly encouraged). If you have any questions as you look through the application or as you consider whether you would like to join our team, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail Anne!

Already entered to run the Boston Marathon and want to join our team?

If you have already qualified to run the Boston Marathon, and have already secured your own entry  with the B.A.A., we would still love to have you join our team! With a reduced fundraising minimum (only $1,000), qualified runners can make their Boston Marathon experience more fulfilling by running to support the Boston Debate League. Our coach can help you run a new personal record. Our team can give you the motivation to make it through the tough winter training. Our organization can give you a new reason to make it to the finish line. Please contact Anne with any questions about this opportunity.

Meet the Coach, Rick Muhr:
Rick brings 15 years of marathon coaching experience to the table. His ability to motivate and inspire has gotten thousands of runners across the finish lines of many marathons. As head coach for Team In Training for 12 years, Rick trained runners for marathons all over the U.S., Dublin and Bermuda in addition to Boston.
While Rick’s basic training program takes runners of all abilities to the starting line, he customizes the program to meet individual goals. He educates his runners on important topics such as core strengthening, stretching, mechanics of running (i.e. form, pace, etc.), nutrition, fueling for workouts and recovery, injury prevention, cross-training, sport psychology and running shoe and proper apparel selection.
In addition, fundraising is always a focus. Rick’s experience with fundraising comes from his participation in the Team In Training program as a runner, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year campaign (in which Rick was chosen “Man of the Year”) and his “Run Across Massachusetts” for the Special Olympics, among others.

Personal Running History:
Rick has completed 36 marathons, including 8 Bostons- all were qualifiers.
2:33 Marathon PR- Chicago Marathon
1983- Rick was ranked fifth in the country at 100K (62 miles).
2002- Rick completed 50 miles in 10 hours, running entirely on a track, to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Man of the Year” campaign (and he was chosen the 2002 Man of the Year).
2004- Run Across Massachusetts- Rick ran 165 miles in 5 days from the NY border to the State House in Boston to raise awareness and money for the Special Olympics.
2006- Rick ran 62 miles on the track to raise funds for the Dr. Cynthia Lucero Latino Mental Health Program at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.

Message from Rick:
“Welcome to the Boston Debate League’s Boston Marathon Team! I am so pleased to be working with you and the Boston Debate League. Together, our efforts will help to extend the social and academic benefits of debate to as many Boston Public Schools students as possible. Debate provides an engaging, educational opportunity for a broad spectrum of students, from those already high achieving to those who are off-track academically and at-risk of dropping out. Urban Debate Leagues like the BDL have a track record of improving academic success.”
