2008-2009 has been a watershed year for the BDL. BPS became a full partner, we expanded to eight schools, tripled the number of students competing, all while significantly increasing the rigor of our programming. Students report that debate is making them smarter(88%), more skilled in reading (71%), and more skilled (83%) and more confident (86%) at public speaking. They believe they are more likely to succeed in college (79%) and in life (83%) because of their participation in debate. In fact 100% of students who weren’t sure if they were going to go to college now report that they are, and it is debate that made the difference.
This success has generated new demand for debate. The central leadership of BPS, along with headmasters around the city, are asking for more. But we cannot do it alone. This is a unique opportunity to support some of the best work being done by teachers and administrators in Boston’s high schools. We are currently in eight high schools, and want to be in forty. Your donation will help make the difference between a League that changes the lives of thousands of youth, sends them to college, and prepares them for successful adulthood, or one that remains a small program making a modest contribution.
