On Saturday, December 3rd, the Greater Boston Policy Debate League competed on BDL home territory, marking the first time the suburban-urban partnership has ventured into the city. Fifty-one students from 13 high schools gathered at Josiah Quincy Upper School for four rounds of debate and plenty of fun. (Pictures HERE).
New Mission’s Ted and Gena White claimed the varsity crown, followed closely by the impressive hybrid team of Nikquania Gamble from Westie and Angie Auguste from Charlestown, who had never debated together before. Excel’s Danielle Cadet was named the top speaker ahead of Brighton’s Nicolas Cathcart, who took second.
Boston Latin Academy put on a show in the JV division, taking home the top three speaker awards and top two team trophies. Henry Chavez and Juan Paniagua, who were also named the second and third place speakers, respectively, extended their season-long undefeated streak to take top honors. They were followed closely by Jennifer Ihedioha and Tinyan Omere (the division’s top individual speaker).
The small but hardy novice division saw Weston sisters Amanda Chen and Jacqueline Chen win the first place team and top two speaker awards. (Amanda took first.) A combination team of Jose Ibarra from Boston Community Leadership Academy and Alex O’Neal from Excel HS ranked second. Congratulations to all of the participants and good luck at the next tournament!
The BDL would like to thank the coaches, faculty and staff of Josiah Quincy Upper School for hosting the event without a hitch. Want to see why so many local students are willing to wake up before 7am on a Saturday? Volunteer at our next tournament! Sign up HERE.
