City Championships a Smashing Success!

This past weekend, more than 150 debaters competed at the city championships at Charlestown High School. Unlike most tournaments, there is a whole lot more than bragging rights on the line at the City Championships as the winner of the varsity division earns a trip to compete at the NAUDL National Championships in New York City. Additionally, the BDL Team of the Year is announced who also is sent to compete at the National Championships in New York. Gina White and Darien Amado from New Mission High School claimed the Team of the Year title after advancing to quarterfinals and thus earned their trip but would go no further. After a series of brutally close and competitive rounds, Gina’s younger brother Ted White and his partner Jason Stengal (also from New Mission) would claim the title of BDL City Champions. However, the runner-ups from JQUS (Lily and Justin Mei) will be representing the BDL along with Gina and Darien at Nationals due to a rule which prohibits more than one team from a single school from competing.

However, there was another hard fought contest unfolding simultaneously in the Junior Varsity division. When the dust cleared a maverick from JQUS named Mohamed Nouri emerged victorious and claimed the title of Junior Varsity City Champion after defeating Rose Pierre-Louis and Shaquis Rue in an extremely close round. Last…. but certainly not least, Jose Nova and Rose Pierre-Louis were the top speakers in the Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions respectively. Congratulations to all those who competed, and thank you so much for a great year. Results can be found HERE.
